Today taught me a lot about the human resources aspect of working within a large organization with various departments. Most of my previous work experience has been with smaller companies, so any human resources interactions were regular and expected. During my time at the Hall of Fame Village, I have had very little interaction with anyone from human resources, and conversations with others within the Operations department have shown that this is a typical experience for anyone that works outside of the main office building. It is a little surprising to me that there is not more intentionality within the human resources department, but this could also be a symptom of an understaffed, still growing organization. This conversation began because we learned that another employee from the Events team is leaving the organization. She was sharing some of her experiences with the human resources department and how she planned to engage in her exit interview with them. Even those employees who have been with the organization for several years have observed that the human resources department does not regularly reach out to employees within the Operations or Events departments, likely because those departments are stationed in a different building than the rest of the organization. It is my feeling that there should be more intentionality from a department whose purpose is to engage with their employees and make sure everyone is getting what they need from their jobs and from their organization. But, I do think that this is likely a symptom of being understaffed in many departments, so it is likely the same situation with the human resources department.
